The Old Road
(The Old Pacific Highway)
The Old Road runs north from Hornsby to Kariong (just south of Gosford).
(Actually, it goes all the way to Brisbane, but this is the bit _I_ call "the old road"...)

Other rides this road leads to: Berowra Waters Ferry, Wisemanns Ferry, Wollombi, Broke
- Time: How many laps do you want to do? :-) Its only about 25km from Berowra
to Gosford, so one run up and back takes less than an hour, *BUT* if you stop for
a chat at the cafe both ways, be prepared to spend all day :-)
- Distance: Only 50km or so, but first you've got to get to Berowra - if you're coming from Hornsby,
its only about 5 mins away, if you've got to come from Cronulla, be prepared to add an
extra hour each way.
- Road conditions: In general, the road is great. It used to be the main highway
north out of Sydney, so I guess its a pretty well made road. There are a few spots where
its common to see loose gravel on the road though, particulary the section near the weigh bridge
at Mount White (a km or so north of the cafe), and the Calga interchange. The only other
thing that bugs me, is the old painted-over lines. The road used to have a few overtaking lanes,
and since its now a "scenic route", they've made it one lane each way, all the way. There's one
particular right hand sweeper a few kms south of the cafe (when your heading south) that has old
painted-over lines right where I want to ride - always makes me a little overcautious, 'specially
in the wet.
- Traffic: Since they opened the freeway and turned it into a "scenic route" the
amount of traffic has dropped, but the type of traffic has changed too - _lots_ of push bikes,
lots of cars dawdling along looking at the scenery, and unmarked cop cars. Keep a good eye on
your mirrors too, theres a lot of bikes travelling faster than you expect as well :-)
Noteworthy waypoints:
- Mobil Berowra
This is a common meeting point for many different groups of riders -
you'll meet everyone from 996 pilots in brand new one piece Dianese leathers,
to the Bankstown Harley owners club (complete with their tow car and trailer),
and everybody in between :-)
- Cowan
- Pie in the Sky
This is a cafe and (surprise surprise) pie shop at the top of the southern
side of the valley that the Hawkesbury River runs down. Its usually full of
bicycle riders on weekends. These days it serves better coffee than the Mt White Cafe,
so quite a few people are stopping there instead.
- Brooklyn
- The Hawkesbury
- Mount White
Any sunny weekend, the cafe here turns into a bike show - its not uncommon
for over 100 bikes to be there, occasionally you'll find upwards of 400!!!
When the crowd gets _really_ big, the service suffers, but this is usually
a great place to stop for a coffee and a chat.
- Peats Ridge turn off
Take a right here to stay on the Old Road, or a left to head for Peats Ridge,
the Wisemanns Ferry Road, or keep going to Wollombi and Broke (where you can
join the Putty Rd).
- Mooney Mooney
- The Slab
The roundabout just outside of Kariong marks the end of what most riders call
The Old Road. From here, you can turn left to get to the Wisemanns Ferry Rd and
the road to Wollombi & Broke, turn right to get to Kariong, Gosford and the freeway,
or turn round and head back down the Old Road (for a coffee at Mt White:-)
Comments:
Be _very_ careful about cops on this road!!! It's probably the most heavily policed road
I know. Watch particularly for unmarked cars (including a blue Magna with VUV 259 numberplates),
who _love_ to book you for speeding (especially in the 70khm "scenic route" zone north of the river),
or for passing over the unbroken lines (where they purposely slow right down in a lot of places
where theres heaps of opportunity to safely nip round them).
