The Royal National Park
This is (to me, at least) the main "south out of Sydney" motorcycle road.
The run thru the park, while short, has a bit of everything - some twisty 25&35k
corners heading down to the weir, 55&65k uphill windy bits on the other side of the weir,
a nice open section across the top, then back into a set of 55&45k twisty hilly curves,
with the occasonal 35k hairpin thrown in for good measure. And, coffee at the end, what more
could you ask for?

- Time: Thru the park itself isn't very far, probably only 20mins or so, so either do a few
laps, or keep going to Bulli Pass, Mt Keira, Macquarie Pass, and Kangaroo Valley - that'll
take you most of the day :-)
- Distance: hmmm, guess I'll have to go and measure it, eh?
- Road conditions: Not great, but usually not too bad. The three bits that always stick
in my mind are (in order, heading south) 1. the lefthander onto the weir at Audley, this
often has gravel on the outside of the turn - I've heard of at least 1 bike dropped there...
2. after you've crossed the weir, and climbed back up out of the valley, there's a quite open
(fast:-) section across the top. When this starts dropping back down again, the first few
corners are very bumpy. 3. deep in the next valley, not far before you get to Stanwell Tops,
the road is often quite green and mossy - particularly after rain. I've never slid on it,
but it _looks_ very slippery.
- Traffic: During the week, almost none :-) On sunny weekends, everybody and their dog
seems to come here for a picnic lots of sightseers, and lots of pushbikes.
Noteworthy waypoints:
- Loftus Oval
This is the usual meeting spot for my friends - its on the left just before the turnoff
to the park, its convenient meeting point, particularly for people who don't know it -
a bunch of bikes in the carpark is pretty easy to see from the main road. Tell them
to start looking on the left just after they go over the rail crossing.
- The Park Turnoff
On the Princes Highway, just past Loftus Oval
- The Park Entrance
As the name suggests, this ride goes thru a National Park. Usually there is a small charge
for park use, but if you let the guy at the ticket booth know your just riding thru, they
won't expect you to pay. Note: this means that if you _do_ stop and use the park facilities, you
may be fined... If you're going to use the picnic grounds, pay your dues, the NPWS are
_not_ the cops, they are the good guys :-) (sorry Corks & Buzz :-)
- The Weir
- "The Top Bit"
- Stanwell Tops - part 1
When you pop out of the park, the first obvious plase to pull off is here. This is where the
radio controlled glider guys play, which is interesting if you are into that sort of stuff,
but you cant get coffee here, and the rest of the bikes will all ride past you, heading for...
- Stanwell Tops - part 2
This is where the hang gliders and paragliders fly from. And more importantly, you _can_ get
coffee here (not very good coffee tho...). Also, this is where all the other bikes stop to chat:-)
From here, you can go back north the way you came, head west to Helensburg and back up to the Princes
Highway at Heathcote, or south down the coast towards Woolongong, and Macquarie Pass :-)
